The word Hijab literally means to cover, conceal, or screen. In Islamic terminology, hijab refers to the system of modest dress and behavior prescribed for Muslim women to protect their dignity and privacy.
The Niqab, on the other hand, is a face-covering garment worn by some Muslim women to cover the face in front of non-mahram men (those with whom marriage is permissible).
Islamic Concept of Modesty and Covering
Islam places great emphasis on modesty (ḥayāʼ) for both men and women. According to Islamic teachings, women are instructed to cover their beauty and physical appearance from non-mahram men as an act of obedience to Allah and to maintain social morality.

These explanations indicate that the jilbab is intended to cover the head, face, chest, and body, reinforcing the concept of comprehensive modesty.
Niqab During Ihram: Special Ruling
During Ihram (the sacred state for Hajj or Umrah), women are instructed not to wear stitched face veils like the niqab. However, this does not mean that women must fully expose their faces.
A narration from Aisha (RA) states:
“When men passed near us during Ihram, we would lower a cloth from our heads over our faces.”
This Hadith demonstrates that even in special circumstances, the principle of modesty remains intact, though the method of covering may change.
Is Niqab Obligatory in Islam?
Some argue that niqab is not obligatory because it is restricted during Ihram. However, Islamic jurisprudence recognizes that obligatory acts may have exceptions under specific conditions. For example:
