8 ways to recognize real pearls

Pearls are found in oysters and are both shiny and valuable. Pearl jewelry has enhanced the beauty and elegance of women for centuries. However, there are also fake pearls made to look like real pearls in the market. Fake pearls are machine-made beads. They are usually made of glass, plastic, or alabaster. These beads, coated like pearls, look exactly like real pearls. If you don't want to get scammed when buying real pearl jewelry, learn how to tell which pearls are fake and which are real.
- Feel the temperature by touching the pearl. Real pearls are cold. They will give you a cool feeling for a few seconds before warming up to skin temperature. Imitation pearls are room temperature. However, imitation pearls made of glass beads may feel cool to the touch. However, they take longer to warm up to the skin than real pearls.
- Look closely at the pearls. If they appear completely perfect and look the same in every way, they are probably fake. Natural pearls are not perfect in finish.
- Hold the pearl up to the light. Real pearls reflect light differently. Fake pearls look shiny like glass.
- Check the color of the pearl. You will see a mixture of pink and green on top of the color of the real pearl. There is a risk of a fake pearl of the same color. However, this method is not always effective. Because the color of the real pearl can also be transparent.
- Check the shape. Most real pearls are rarely round. They can be oval, round-like, or round, drop-shaped, or irregularly shaped. Round pearls are usually more expensive than pearls of other shapes. Fake pearls are all the same round shape.
- Rub the pearls against your teeth to test the feel of the surface. Lightly rub the pearls against your front teeth. Imitation pearls usually feel smooth or glassy.
- Real pearls are heavier than fake ones, so feel the difference in weight with your hands.
- The drill holes in real pearls are usually very small. The holes in imitation pearls are larger. The coating around the holes in imitation pearls is usually thin and shiny. The coating around the holes may appear to be lifting in the case of imitation pearls.
