How often should you change your toothbrush?

When was the last time you changed your toothbrush? If you can't remember, you may be unknowingly damaging your teeth. Even after brushing your teeth twice a day, using an old and completely useless toothbrush cannot prevent tooth damage. Dr. Michelle Kelman, a lecturer at the UCLA School of Dentistry in Los Angeles, told how long it is safe to use a toothbrush.
According to Kelman, you should replace your toothbrush at least every three months. However, depending on how you use it, it may take less time. Some people brush their teeth with a little more force, which can wear out their brushes in a shorter period of time. You should also replace your toothbrush after recovering from an illness, especially a viral infection.
Kelman says you should take a good look at the bristles of your brush. If the bristles are brittle, they should be replaced.
What can happen if you use the same toothbrush for a long time?
- Teeth will not be cleaned properly.
- Germs can build up and spread in the mouth.
Tips
- Floss your teeth before brushing.
- Air dry your toothbrush before storing it in a closed container. This will prevent bacteria from growing.
- Floss your teeth at least once a day, especially after meals.
- Do not keep your brush in damp and humid conditions. Many people keep their brush in the bathroom. This is not right.
- You should clean your toothbrush regularly. Wash your toothbrush in hot water at least once a week before using it. This will reduce the risk of bacterial infection. Also, soaking your toothbrush in a mouthwash solution for a couple of minutes will also disinfect it.
